Jack The Ripper by Japandroids
🎶 Velouria's Odd Song of the Day
In my early days of music streaming I came across the Japandroids. I remembered their album cover for Post Nothing but, sadly, forgot their name so I lost track of them for a while. Then one fine day an album caught my eye. It was nothing like how I’d remembered it.
I had thought there were stick figures, not actual humans on the album’s artwork. Weird. It was confusing, but with one listen I knew this was them, this was the band I’d been hoping to one day reconnect with. Like some Uncle-Ricoesque person who never quite gave up on the one that got away.
The music felt raw, like a fresh wound, and they could be a chaotic, unpredictable listen. They kept me on my toes. However, the song that really jumped out of their catalogue for me just so happens to be a cover.
The original Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds song didn’t need to be covered; it’s too good to begin with. The Japandroids do a nice nice job, though. They manage to soften it, but they also make it harder at the same time. Again, I’m confused. That duality draws me in. I hope the odd song of today draws you in as well.
Jack The Ripper by Japandroids (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds cover)
I got a woman
She rules my house with an iron fist
I got a woman
She rules my house with an iron fist
She screams out Jack the Ripper
Every time I try to give that girl a kiss
I got a woman
She strikes me down with a fist of lead
I got a woman
She strikes me down with a fist of lead
We bed in a bucket of butcher's knives
I awake with a hatchet hanging over my head
Well you know the story of the viper
It's long and lean with poison tooth
Yeah, you know the story of the viper
It's long and lean with poison tooth
Well they're hissing under the floorboards
Hanging down in bunches from my roof
I got a woman
She just hollers what she wants from where she is
I got a woman
She just hollers what she wants from where she is
She screams out Jack the Ripper
Every time I try to give that girl a kiss
